Atomic Blonde 2: Confirmed To Be In Early Development With Netflix

It’s been reported exclusively by DiscussingFilm, that a sequel for Charlize Theorn’s 2017 action film Atomic Blonde has finally been greenlit by none other than Netflix! This is a huge win by the studio, & is sure to be the first of many large titles we see join the streaming world very soon.

This news shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone given the fact that back in August of 2019, John Wick director David Leitch, actually spoke with SlasherFilm on the likelihood of the long-anticipated sequel possibly heading to a streaming service in the future.

David Leitch speaking with SlasherFilm:

I think there is [still talk of a sequel]. A streaming service is into it. I don’t know all the details. I was a work-for-hire on that movie, but at the end of the day, Kelly McCormick – my producing partner and my wife – she will be involved, I’m sure, as a producer. That’s how I got the gig in the first place. We’ll see.

Atomic Blonde, written by Kurt Johnstad who’s most notably known for his work on 2006’s 300 and it’s 2014’s sequel 300: Rise Of An Empire. Based on the graphic novel titled Coldest City, written by Antony Johnston & illustrated by Sam Hart. Went on to become a fan favorite amongst the audiences worldwide, rivaling that of even another beloved action franchise John Wick, & is now even looked at as one of the best action films of our last decade. In fact, Charlize Theorn was met with so much praise for her incredible performance as Lorraine Broughton, that many fans most notably Chris Hemsworth especially, were even rallying for her to take on the reigns as the new James Bond after Daniel Craig!

In 2017, Speaking with W Magazine on Theorn possibly being the next 007, Hemsworth mentions:

“She’s embodies every sort of ounce of strength and nobility and dignity and integrity that that character should have,”

Even going as far as to praise her work in 2012’s Snow White and the Hunstman saying:

 “She’s smart as hell. She’s physically able. I worked with her on Snow White and the Huntsman. Watching her in those fight scenes, doing it in high heels, by the way, and an eight foot long gown was even more impressive.”

For years now, Theorn has been looked at by many as not just one of the best actors of our time, but geniungly one of the most prominent & best talents in the entertainment industry period. Having already won an Oscar for her role in 2003’s Monster directed by  Patty Jenkins who’s now most well known for the highly well-praised film 2017’s Wonder Woman, & becoming the standout star of George Miller’s Oscar winning film Mad Max: Fury Road playing as one of the most memorable female action heroes to have ever grace the screen, Furiosa.

Theorn has even done some incredible work behind the camera as well. Being an executive producer on one of Netflix’s most popular drama series Mindhunter, and now has been said to also be joining in as executive producer for this upcoming sequel. So it’s safe to say that this film couldn’t have been in better hands!

I for one am excited to see what director Leitch & Netflix has planned this new story, & look forward to seeing Theorn finally return as the BADASS action spy that is Lorraine Broughton!
