Brother (2022) Movie Review

Directed by Clement Virgo comes one of Netflix’s best drama in the title “Brother”. A film that speaks heavily on the bonds shared with family, loss, loyalty, and love. Starring in the film is rising star Aaron Pierre, Lamar Johnson, Kiana Madeira, Marsha Stephanie Blake, and Lovell Adams Gray.

Not very often do we come across a film that at its core is raw, visceral and emotionally gut-wrenching in its storytelling. Director Virgo does a fascinating job bringing these elements to the screen, and allows the audience time to connect with this world and it’s characters. The atmosphere in this film feels strictly based in reality, and showcases what many young people of color struggle to go through each and every day regarding police brutality, family, and self discovery.

Our two protagonists in Francis and Michael grew up in a household with a single mom struggling to make ends meet, and throughout the course of the film we see these brothers forced to grow as men at a time where society is all but kind, and challenged in ways that makes them value the meaning of life. Director Virgo makes us realize the toll that anger can have on us, and how it can sometimes change us into the worst of ourselves, but also makes it clear that no matter how hard life is, we need to continue to push each other forward and make something of ourselves. While overcoming the struggles and hate that come our way. By becoming the best that we wish to see in this world. One step at time. Starting with family.

Brother shows how much of an effect grief can have on one self, and how losing someone we love can ultimately break us in ways that can shatter our very own reality. It is a film that reveals the meaning of loyalty and why our bond with family is so strong. No matter the obstacle we face, and the mistakes we make. We must forgive, and understand that it is the love and bonds we share that shapes us into who we are.

Director Clement Virgo does a wonderful job bringing forth this incredibly well made heartfelt story that shows how powerful a mother’s love can be. Marsha Stephanie Blake gives an excellent performance as a parent figure who’s lost it all and has basically hit rock bottom. Trying to lead a family of two sons that are need of support and guidance, and unfortunately at times finds influence in people that may not always have their best interest at heart.

Kiana Madeira and Lovell Adams Gray brings so much needed soul into the film. Acting as love interests who underneath it all are in some ways just as lost and broken as our main protagonists. Both actors are incredible throughout this movie, and have created two phenomenal characters that are the anchors that help hold Francis and Michael together. Two beautiful performances that truly show what this film is about at the center of it all.

I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this movie. It is a definite must-see and will often catch you off guard with just how deep of a connection its messages are with its audience. While giving us some of the most relatable characters seen on screen in a while. I recommend everyone give this film a chance and check it out. Well worth the time.
