Director, Writer, and Producer George Miller is a filmmaker best known for the creation of one of the biggest and most successful action franchises within the industry in Mad Max. Many fan favorite science fiction films in Doomsday, Waterworld, The Book of Eli, and more have all had a very strong influence related to the 1979’s Mad Max. Each premise of the titles just mentioned play similar in tone to that of George Miller’s masterpiece. Showcasing a post apocalyptic universe where humanity has fallen grim to its worst impulses causing society as a whole to crumble. Leaving one man amongst the impure, to rise above the darkness and stand tall against the very insanity that’s plagued our world.

Speaking on his younger days and inspiration for his motive in wanting to create such a franchise, Miller states:

“There’s no question that ‘Mad Max’ was influenced by my childhood in rural Queensland, which Chinchilla itself is west of the Darling Downs. Completely flat roads, loamy soil, heat haze, burnt land. And with a very intense car culture. I mean, the main street of town and Saturday night with just the kids in their cars. By the time we were out of our teens, several of our peers had already been killed or badly injured in car accidents. And there was just those long, flat roads where there was no speed limit and people would just go.”

Each Mad Max title throughout the years have bought tons of success at the box office and joy amongst fans worldwide, but none of them compared to the amazing work done in the latest sequel best known as – Mad Max: Fury Road. Starring leads in Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. This is a film that went on in being nominated for 10 Oscars in total. While winning 6 of them in Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hair Styling, and lastly Best Sound Editing. Not many directors within the industry have gotten even close to the accomplishments achieved by Miller and his production crew and cast on this incredible film. Leaving many in the end to stating Miller as an absolute GENIUS of his own right.

After the massive success of Fury Road, Miller found himself wanting to go back to the beloved character Furiosa. A warrior that has matched the same level of intensity as Max himself within the universe. One detail that may catch people off guard is that the story of Furiosa was originally going to be an animated project, but that changed over time, and organically evolved into a live action adaptation instead. Speaking with Geeks Of Color about what led to the change, Miller states:

“We were thinking of making it as an anime, and that’s why it was fully developed, partly, but then Fury Road was once again delayed, and there was no point in making an anime,” Miller revealed. “We were going to do it with Mahiro Maeda. He started this illustration and he put a teddy bear, and that became part of the story. That was way back before Fury Road.”

Charlize Theron was originally going to lead the project, but after some thought, Miller eventually changed to having rising star Anya Taylor Joy as frontrunner instead. Stating:

“I thought we could still do it with Charlize, and then I saw these other movies like The Irishman where they made people look younger, and particularly I saw Gemini Man,” Miller said. “All I was looking at was the technology; I wasn’t looking at the performance. I thought, ‘We can’t do it.’”

SYNOPSIS

Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.

Furiosa was to many fans, an unexpected surprise from director George Miller, and in many ways does justice to the already amazing film that is Fury Road. Leading stars Anya Taylor Joy who I’ve mentioned before and of course action star Chris Hemsworth both do a fantastic job capturing the spirit of what makes the characters within this universe so incredibly unique. Ultimately showcasing just how good of a cast Miller bought together. While also revealing how great of a director he is in the process of it all.

This is a film that is not only adventurous, but action-packed from beginning to end. It is a story that does an amazing job in giving us a female protagonist that isn’t only likable, but inspiring to say the least. There’s no doubt in my mind that people will end up looking back at this film as one of Miller’s all time best. An instant classic in every way possible. From the beautiful set pieces to the wonderful soundtrack created by the talented composer Junkie XL, Furiosa stands as one 2024’s best, and deserves all the praise it gets and more. It is a MUST-WATCH, and should be seen on the biggest screen you can find.

Getting to my last point, the Mad Max franchise as a whole has been beloved for 45 years. Why? Simple. It treats itself as a pure action fantasy that captures the heart of what makes films in general so exciting and fun to watch. This is a franchise that is full of adrenaline, and breaths that same energy onto its audience with each new chapter that comes out, and will continue to do so decades into the future. Easily a masterpiece in every way of the word, and lastly a love letter to the action genre itself.

If you haven’t yet go see Furiosa as soon as you can, and once you’re done, spread the word to your close ones to get the hype going. Send us your thoughts through our twitter and youtube channels, and as always we’d love to hear from you.
