David Gordon Green’s Halloween Trilogy – One of Horror’s BEST!
Written by John Darius
In 2018 director David Gordon Green gave us a look back at one of the best horror franchises ever to hit screen in Halloween. The film went on becoming a commercial success amongst the masses and with that came two sequels in 2021’s Halloween Kills and 2022’s Halloween Ends. Each film has left its stamp within the horror genre. Being highly praised by many, and has gone on in becoming cult classics over the years amongst fans.
It is a story about a young woman by the name of Laurie Strode played by Jamie Lee Curtis, who’s faced in horror against the personification of evil or as many would call him, the boogyman…
Created by Debra Hill and horror director John Carpenter, 1978’s Halloween was noted as a game changer by critics and audience goers alike. Quintessentially standing as one of the best influential slashers within cinema, and represented as one of the most beloved horror films to come of its era.
What David Gordon Green and Danny McBride handle so well with this franchise is that they’ve bought back the simplicity that’s embedded in the character of Michael Myers. For many years, we’ve referred to him as the shape. A being known to many to be more than just a man, and at best is the physical manifestation of humanity at their darkest.
It is the idea behind this horrific icon that should haunt us. Which is the simple reality that Michael Myers while fictional, can be in essence anyone. First showcased with Rohan Campbell’s character Corey Cunningham in Halloween Ends. Whether we’d like to accept it or not, there is a darkness that looms in all of us, and can at times change us into something unrecognizable. David Gordon Green does a fantastic job capturing this message perfectly throughout his story, & revealing to us the dramatic and damaging effects trauma can have on one’s self, & how much it change us from who we once were.
If Michael Myers is a representation of the evil in our hearts, then Laurie Strode acts as the primary opposite. Her ability in rising above the tragedy she’s endured. While not allowing it to define her, is exactly why she is the centerpiece, and heroine needed for this trilogy.
Introducing a whole new cast led by newcomers Andi Matichak and Judy Greer. 2018’s Halloween starts off this series with a bang, & gives off some fantastic performances that blows audiences away! These new characters are nothing short of amazing, and are yet again another reason why these films worked so damn well in their time.
Both Michael Myers and Laurie Strode showcases to us the worse and best of ourselves. Nonetheless giving us a deeper insight into who we can become when ultimately succumbed by fear and despair. David Gordon Green does an outstanding job directing this film and highlights these two characters at their absolute finest. While creating a world that’s enough to engulf you from beginning to end. This is a trilogy that has a strong identity and knows what it is from the start. Definitely worth a watch for those whom are even the slightest bit interested in the slasher genre.
