2023 has been an incredible year for cinema so far. Many films like Oppenheimer , Barbie, Killers Of The Flower Moon, The Creator, and May December to name a few. Have all gone on in becoming a huge hit amongst the masses. Delivering some of the most insightful and meaningful stories to come in years.

Now with Netflix’s Leave The World Behind, comes a new film that stands out as a powerful reflection on the times we’re living in today.

Synopsis:

A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a blackout. As the threat grows, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.

Directed, written, and produced by Sam Esmail comes a new apocalyptic psychological thriller that showcases the damaging effects of what a broken society can mean for us and our survival. Based on the book of the same name written by Rumaam Alam. Leave The World Behind acts as a beautifully well told story that takes us deep into the idea of just how much of our world can crumble at the face of war. While at the end of it all, showing how easily people can drastically change in relation to such an attack. Forcing us as individuals to question ourselves and the morals we live by at a time when all seems lost.

Led by an A lister cast in Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, & Kevin Bacon. Along with supporting actors in Myha’la Herrold, Farrah Mackenzie, and Charlie Evans. Leave The World Behind gives us a cold but important and riveting look at what our future could become if we as a society are not careful with how we choose to go about evolving as people.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly Director Sam Esmail states:

When I expanded the disaster elements in the sort of cyber attack context, I think that exposed that notion to the audience of what a cyber attack might look like,”

Because cyber attacks in general are a little obtuse and mysterious in their own right. I think people don’t quite grasp what that means or what that would look like. And when you start dramatizing that on screen and they start realizing that that’s a real connection to reality, I think that’s where the real terror might hit.”

Director Esmail also mentions that he hopes this film tackled enough themes to spark fear and act as an eye opener amongst audiences:

For me, this was a conversation starter. It’s to really get inside your mind and unlock the fears that you might really have about our world, and to be moved by that enough to talk to someone about it.”

Leave The World Behind is easily one of the most fascinating films to come this year. Managing to generate enough of an insight on just how easily our lives can be controlled at the hands of technology. Acting as a devastating and compelling watch that is sure to have you on edge from start to finish.

Another win by Netflix and everyone involved. Wonderful work done by an amazing cast and crew that delivers on a truly engaging story that is well worth every minute and will indeed leave one breathless by the end.
