RETRO REVIEW: TRON LEGACY
Written by John Darius
In 1982 Walt Disney introduced audiences to a never-before seen world in the film known to many as TRON. Directed by Steven Lisberger and led by leading star Jeff Bridges. Tron was in its very essence at the time, The Matrix before The Matrix. Taking us into a cyberspace full of unlimited imagination.
The story follows computer engineer Kevin Flynn. Who in attempt to prevent his work from being stolen by executive Ed Dillinger, hacks into the system of his company ENCOM. Transported into a digital world where he must face off against Dillinger’s computerized likeness sark, and the imposing master control program. Flynn is aided by Tron and Yori in a fight for freedom for the oppressed of the grid.
Twenty-eight years later the film was followed up by a direct sequel in the feature titled Tron: Legacy. Starring returning lead Jeff Bridges. Along with newly upcomers Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.
Haunted over the disappearance of his father, Sam Flynn who after being drawn to an old arcade is transported into a cyber world far beyond his wildest dreams. Aided by the support of fearless warrior Quorra, Sam must fight his way to freedom in an attempt to save his father and the world from total destruction at hands of the sinister program C.L.U.
While both TRON and Tron: Legacy do indeed share a similar plot from each other, they are in fact some of cinema’s finest sc-fi films to come in ages. Tron: Legacy at its core was a love letter to the work of director Lisberger, and gave audiences a new found appreciation for the franchise as a whole. While allowing for a new lead to take over in Kevin Flynn’s son Sam Flynn. It was a brilliant move by director Joseph Kosinski to give newcomers who’ve never seen the original film to have a protagonist act as almost an avatar for them in this newly well-crafted vision.
One of the reasons why I believe the TRON franchise stands out from other science fiction series in the past is that with each story that takes place, the world itself continues to evolve into something both unique and fascinating. In each viewing you’re left with wanting more from a universe filled with endless wonder and fantasy.
The sheer idea of just being taken into a cyberspace designed as a video game is in itself just an awesome mind bending concept that was bound to gain traction with general audiences. Because of this, Tron: Legacy is still recognized as one of cinema’s best achievements to this day, and helped in ultimately building upon a once forgotten obsession. While in the end becoming a worldwide phenomenon for over a decade amongst fans since its release.
Consisted with a set of diverse and lovable characters. Along with an amazing soundtrack orchestrated by electronic duo Daft Punk , Director Joseph Kosinski has created a film beyond it’s years. Establishing a wonderful fanbase, and giving people a timeless story that continues to warm and shape the hearts of many.
There have already been talks that a reboot titled Tron: Ares is in the works, and it’s been said by multiple sources that Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto will be leading the film. While Joachim Ronning will act as director. Plot details are unknown at this time, but you can be rest assured that more information should be coming some time later this year.
What was your thoughts regarding this incredible sequel and where would you like to see the franchise go next? Let us know through our Twitter and Youtube channel. Hope you enjoyed this review. See you all next time. Peace and love to all.
