Rurouni Kenshin: Film Saga Review
Written by John Darius
Growing up I always had a deep love for anime and manga. One of my favorites as a kid was none other than rurouni kenshin. An action fast paced tale set during the new age of 1868. Centered around a young samurai by the name of Kenshin Himura whom after the bakumatsu war ends, travels Japan with an inverted sword, to defend the needy without killing.
My love for this epic story stems from the fact that our hero Himura Kenshin is first and foremost a human who holds a fragile heart. That at the center of it all, cares for the genuine well being of another. A hero that wants peace. A world without war, and in the eyes of many stands the test of time. While easily becoming one of the best and most inspiring protagonists ever made in manga history to date.
Directed by Keishi Ohtomo, the rurouni kenshin saga is a series of films that may very well be the best adaptation from manga to screen yet. The set pieces along with the costume designs, and performances themselves are done beautifully, & vibrates even more thanks to an amazingly talented cast filled with some very notable names in: Takeru Satoh, Emi Takei, Mackenyu Arata, Kasumi Arimura, & Yosuke Eguchi.
The choreography throughout this series is nothing but superb. Simply outstanding, & effortlessly embodies the style and edginess from the manga itself page to page. Almost outclassing and even matching that of other masterpieces in IP man, The Raid, & of course Netflix’s 2018 The Night Comes For Us. Excellent job done by Kenji Tanigaki. Whom mostly known for previous films in: Snake Eyes, Killzone, Blade 2, & Flash Point.
This new take on a beloved long time anime, can very well help more adaptations of other manga to be made in the future, & should no doubt be used as a blue print for more stories to come. On December 2021, it was announced that a new television series adaptation is on the way set to be done by the studio linden films. A trailer was released September 2022, and can be watched below. The series is said to re-adapt the original manga series and is set for a 2023 release, and be sure to check out this epic saga on Netflix!
